house in faro

The house is located in the historic center of the city of Faro, within a block characterized by houses built between two streets.

In the Mediterranean tradition, the new house is organized around a central courtyard—a courtyard measuring 9 × 9 × 7 meters, built within the plot. The courtyard is the outdoor living room of the house. This space, which on one hand serves as a refuge from the city and a place of family intimacy, is also, due to its cubic form, a receptacle of light, where the opening to the sky marks the passage of time.

The project reuses an existing house, distributing a family program across two floors. The ground floor, with entrances on both streets, allows for a route that crosses the plot and passes through the courtyard. On the south side are the living room and kitchen with double-height ceilings, while on the north side there is a studio with direct access from the street. On the first floor, there is a shared workspace, two bedrooms on the south side that share a balcony overlooking the street, and on the north side the master bedroom with direct access to the courtyard.

The house is built using an elementary construction system: solid brick flooring measuring 4 × 4 × 24 cm, combined with special marble stone pieces; the walls are plastered, and the ceilings are exposed concrete; window frames and shutters are made of painted wood. The water tank, located in the central courtyard, is clad in marble stone. A stone spout lets the sound of water echo throughout the house.

The atmosphere of the house is defined by a sequence of spaces of light and shadow, centered around the courtyard.
